Introduction

Enzymology and biocatalysis are entering a promising new era as they transition into data-driven sciences. High-throughput experimentation generates a rapidly increasing stream of enzyme reaction data, providing the raw material for mechanistic and data-driven modeling to design novel enzyme-catalyzed reactions. However, current laboratory routines and scientific communication practices are insufficient to ensure experimental reproducibility and scalable data analysis. To take full advantage of rapid progress in experimental and computational technologies, enzyme reaction data must become findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). EnzymeML addresses this need as a standardized data exchange format that reports the reaction, reaction conditions, measured data, the selected kinetic model, and the estimated kinetic parameters. Additionally, the EnzymeML platform provides reusable, extensible tools to process, analyze, and model reaction data, and to upload results and raw data to public repositories.

Ultimately, the FAIRification of data and the digitalization of enzymology and biocatalysis will improve research efficiency through automation and guarantee scientific quality through reproducibility. Most importantly, these advancements foster reasoning and hypothesis creation by enabling the reanalysis of previously published data, thereby driving disruptive research and innovation.
