The contamination of water bodies by micro- and nanoplastics poses a critical environmental threat, affecting marine life, ecosystems, and human health. These plastic particles carry harmful pollutants, disrupt biological processes in aquatic organisms, and accumulate in the food chain, leading to broader toxicological risks. Addressing this pollution is imperative, and advanced nanotechnologies offer a promising solution. Utilizing the unique properties of nanomaterials, such as large surface areas and high reactivity, nanofiber filters and photocatalytic materials can efficiently adsorb or decompose plastic particles. These solutions have the potential to revolutionize water treatment methods, restoring water ecosystems and protecting public health from plastic pollution.

This thematic issue aims to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to share insights and findings on using advanced nanomaterials for micro- and nanoplastic removal. The focus is on highlighting cutting-edge research and advancements to address the urgent need for sustainable and efficient micro- and nanoplastic remediation.

Topics of interest include techniques or materials for micro- and nanoplastic removal, such as:

  • Adsorbent nanomaterials, modified nanoparticles or nanostructured materials, including risk assessment
  • Nanofiltration approaches
  • Polymer nanocomposites
  • Nanophotocatalysts
  • Electrochemical nanomaterials

We will consider original full research articles, reviews, perspectives and letters from around the globe, encouraging multidisciplinary contributions from materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and related fields.
