After more than a decade, the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry is once again curating a thematic issue devoted to gold, entitled "Molecular gold chemistry". Note that after "Gold catalysis for organic synthesis" in 2011 and "Gold catalysis for organic synthesis II" in 2013, this new thematic issue is deliberately designed to fit within a broader context and aligns with the ongoing intense developments in the field.

We envision to cover new catalytic processes featuring novel reactions, asymmetric catalysis by ligand design, and the emerging cross-coupling reactions. In the quest for more sustainable gold catalysis, new modes of activation, such as photocatalysis and electrochemistry, have also proved to be valuable in promoting some of these processes. In addition, we aim to highlight new advances in the coordination chemistry of gold complexes, the properties of organogold complexes, as well as their applications in biology and materials science. Finally, we wish to showcase the utilization of gold chemistry in the synthesis of natural products and other functional molecules.
