Natural products are highly functionalized small molecules that possess unrivaled chemical and structural diversities. Accordingly, these molecules possess a wide range of biological activities, serve as useful probes in chemical biology, and inspire discoveries in chemistry, biosynthesis, and enzymology. This thematic issue aims to highlight young investigators in the field of natural products. Research or review topics may include, but are not limited to, i) chemistry: natural product discovery, structural elucidation challenges, total synthesis, chemoenzymatic synthesis, chemical biology probes, mode of action studies, ii) biosynthesis: genome mining, pathway elucidations, heterologous expression, unnatural natural products and combinatorial biosynthesis, and iii) enzymology: functional and mechanistic investigations, structural biology, natural product-inspired biocatalysis.
